Summa Strategies Elevates Carlene Variyan to Partner; Josie Sabatino Named Vice President

OTTAWA, ON – August 5, 2025 – Summa Strategies, one of Canada’s leading government relations and public affairs firms, today announced two significant promotions from within its leadership team: Carlene Variyan has joined the business’ partnership team, and Josie Sabatino has been promoted to Vice President.

These advancements recognize Ms. Variyan’s and Ms. Sabatino’s exceptional contributions to the firm, their dedication to client success, and their proven leadership within the Summa Strategies team.

Carlene Variyan, Partner

Carlene Variyan joined Summa Strategies in 2021, and has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled understanding of the federal political and policy landscape. In addition to strategic advisory services to clients across multiple sectors, including natural resources, agriculture, labour, and tech, Ms. Variyan also leads Summa’s communications practice. Her strategic acumen, deep policy knowledge, and extensive network have been instrumental in securing victories for Summa’s diverse client base. As a partner, Ms. Variyan will play an even greater role in the firm’s strategic direction.

“Carlene has been an invaluable asset to Summa Strategies since the day she joined us,” said Robin MacLachlan, President of Summa. “Her sharp intellect, unwavering commitment, and ability to navigate complex issues with grace make her a natural fit for partnership. We are thrilled to welcome her to this new leadership role as Summa continues to grow and evolve.”

Prior to joining Summa, Ms. Variyan held senior roles in the federal government, including as a Director of Communications and later Chief of Staff to several federal cabinet ministers, and acted as a national campaign spokesperson through several federal elections. Ms. Variyan draws upon her experience across a range of federal departments, from central agencies to security and economic portfolios, to deliver for Summa’s clients.

Josie Sabatino, Vice President

Josie Sabatino’s promotion to Vice President acknowledges her outstanding track record in client service and team leadership. Since joining Summa Strategies, Ms. Sabatino has consistently delivered exceptional results for clients, demonstrating a keen ability to anticipate challenges and develop effective advocacy strategies.

“Josie’s dedication and exceptional ability to deliver results have made a significant impact on our clients and our team,” added Kate Harrison, Vice-Chair at Summa. “Her promotion to Vice President is a testament to her hard work, strategic thinking, and the strong relationships she builds. We are confident that she will continue to excel in this expanded leadership capacity.”

Ms. Sabatino brings a strong background in political engagement and stakeholder relations, having worked in various capacities within the public and private sectors.

Ms. Variyan and Ms. Sabatino’s promotions follow the recent recruitment of Vice President and Digital Lead Christine Burke, and Senior Consultant Bryce McRae, who joined the firm in June.

“We are thrilled to have onboarded and elevated these talented individuals, representing diverse political backgrounds and networks, who will continue building on Summa’s nearly 30-year history of client service and excellence,” said Harrison.
